Kentucky Guitar Works at the Center for Lutherie offers comprehensive training in guitar design, construction and maintenance of both electric and acoustic guitars. In keeping with MI’s total-immersion approach to education, the classroom is a fully equipped instrument manufacturing facility.
As a final project, you design and build your own instrument, learning through direct experience under the guidance of first-rank professionals how to analyze and solve the problems encountered by working luthiers.
Whether your goal is to work for a guitar manufacturer, design and build your own instruments, or work as a guitar tech, a Guitar Craft education provides the foundation for success.
This is the first ever offered 7-day, hands-on workshop is designed for both
first-time builders and those with some experience. With a small group of 2
students, you'll receive personalized attention and guidance throughout the process of constructing a fine acoustic guitar from start to finish. Under the instruction of Master Luthier Rick Faris, you'll learn everything you need to know about tools, fixtures, wood, and pearl inlay, along with special tips from Rick’s 30+ years of guitar-building experience and his award-winning career in Bluegrass music Rick will also provide a professional spray finish at no extra cost with pick-up or shipping at a mutually agreed upon later date. By the end of the workshop, you'll have built a guitar you can be proud of.
Rick will be assisted by Luthier Apprentice Shane Dewitt, and the workshop
will include a private tour of the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame & Museum.

You and Rick will schedule the 7-day workshop for a mutually beneficial week. During the workshop, you'll construct a Pre-War dreadnought style guitar from start to finish using top-quality materials. Rick will provide a professional Nitrocellulose lacquer spray finish at no extra cost with pick-up or shipping at a mutually agreed upon later date. The workshop includes a private tour of the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame & Museum. We will supply all necessary tools and materials, and Rick will personally guide you through the building process. No prior experience is required. By the end of the class, you'll have crafted a Pre War style dreadnought guitar custom built at Kentucky Guitar Works in the
Bluegrass Music Capital of the World with a knowledge and understanding of the skills needed to build more in the future.

Join us for an all-day workshop where you'll learn essential techniques to adjust your guitar for optimal playability and tone. Led by Master Luthier Rick Faris, with occasional special guest appearances, this comprehensive all-day class will teach you everything you need to know to set up your own guitar.
In this hands-on workshop, we will cover key topics like fret leveling, truss rod adjustments, fine-tuning the nut and saddle, setting intonation, and adjusting pickup height. We'll also go over the necessary tools for the job.
This is a genuine set-up workshop, teaching you the exact techniques used at the Faris Guitar Company shop. Bring your own guitar, and by the end of the day, you'll have a professional-quality setup—done by you—that feels and plays as smooth as silk. Plus, you'll walk away with the skills to make any structurally sound instrument play like never before. We pride ourselves on teaching the basic guitar setup to increase the pride you have in your instrument.
The class runs from 11 am to 5 pm, with a 30-minute lunch break. If you have two guitars, bring both, and don’t forget to bring strings (or you can purchase them on-site). Space is limited to five students per session, ensuring that each participant has a dedicated workstation.
